Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old has gone, the new has come!
2 Corinthians 5:17

Metro Family Ministries, Inc. _ the ROC is a 501c-3 organization (charitable, Christian, non-profit, organization) that exists to make ministry possible in the name of Jesus Christ to the glory of God by providing ministry space and opportunity for Christians and Churches and also providing unique ministries as well. Metro family Ministries, Inc. is housed at The Re-Creation Outreach Center a.k.a. the ROC.
It start in 1991. There was a youth leader from a church in Sachse that ask the owners of Metro Sports Center located at 3375 Edgewood Drive in Garland, Texas if they could come on Sunday afternoon and have a program for the young people of the community. After this program had been in place for a few weeks the number of youth responding grew to the point help was needed. The youth leader from Sachse had connections with Freeman Heights youth and ask if they would like to help. Towards the end of 1991 the owners of Metro Sports Center had decided to move to another location in Garland. The outreach program was on and off and having a very hard time finding volunteers but it was clear there was a need in this community. When the propriety came on the market in early 1992 the Pastor of Freeman Heights, Rev Larry Venable, invited the deacon body to come and look at the building. It was through the vision presented and the leading of the Holy Spirit this journey began.
In 1993 Metro Family Ministries, Inc. was incorporated as a 501,(C) (3) non profit corporation. A Board of Directors was established and the building was named The Recreation Outreach Center or The ROC as it is best known.
If we step forward about four more years there was a special summer event that involved many churches in Dallas County in Evangelistic Block Parties. These Block Parties were planned for communities with a high concentration of low income multi-cultural people. Arapaho Road Baptist Church joined with us to help sponsor the Block Party as they were already involved in toys/food/clothes for Christmas for the West Garland area around The ROC. After cooking the chicken for about 500 people on grills dug into the ground in 104º plus temperature it was decided we had a better idea. By the next summer we had plans for an event that combined health information, food, door prizes and school supplies and no grills dug in the ground. Twelve years have passed and we are still providing school supplies for over 650 students thanks to the help of all of the afore named churches plus one other.
In 2000, First United Methodist Church also came wanting to know more about The ROC and what happens there. As it turned out their Senior Pastor Rev Mike Haynes had encouraged (Pastorally speaking) the Mission Committee to find a location that FUMC could become involved in mission work in West Garland. Again after several meetings FUMC joined in a partnership agreement that continues to grow.
Even though they have been involved in different events for several years, Zion Church presented us with the outline of a program born out of observation and a longing to help older middle school and high school students. As this program continues to grow they now invite community service students to join and earn hours by performing task like setting up/tear down for the live band, serving the food or cleaning up afterward. Included is a time to hangout and make new friends, shoot a few hoops and participate in a focused bible study time.
The purpose of Metro Family Ministries, Inc. is to reach the unreached with the Christ-centered message of love, forgiveness, and hope; while integrating persons of diverse social, economic, cultural, and racial backgrounds. We seek to accomplish this by providing for physical, mental, and spiritual needs, which the Metro Family Ministries, Inc. and their resources can supply through love, training, fellowship, acceptance, and by establishing a purpose to life.
